How to Dress Like You're Living in the 70s

Posted on: August 24, 2011

When people think of the 70's they think of times when things were easy-going and a time when you could just feel like you were floating away. The 70s inspired bold fashion. The clothing was bright and the pants were big with a lot of floral print. Maybe you are wondering how to dress to fit the 70s trends. The 70s were the first decade to really experiment in fashion. There are many fashion trends from that area that still appear in a lot of teen's wardrobes today.

Some of the really popular trends that began in the 70s were bell bottom jeans (also known as parachutt pants), afro hair, neon clothing, peace signs, animal print, floral print, sequined textures.

How to dress in 70s attire for women:

*Short shorts. In the 70s, many styles began to shorten. Shorts and dresses were cut to expose much of the legs. They often wore sneakers with athletic shorts everyday. If you were going to attend a disco, you could wear your athletic shorts but trade in the sneakers for a nice pair of platforms.

*Halter tops. These are the shirts that have the top area of the back open. They tie around the neck and your midriff would often be shown. In the 70s, there were some girls that would even use bandanas as halter tops. These were known as sexy items that came in many colors, sizes and styles.

How to dress in 70s attire for men:

*Leisure suits. This is a jacket with matching pants. These were popular among young men who didn't enjoy the stuffy formal wear that was made in the 60s. Leisure suits were made comfortable, cheap and easy to take care of. They were made of double knit polyester.

Styles that were made for both men and women in the 70s:

*Platforms. These were shoes that were worn both by women and men.

*Clogs. Clogs became very fashionable during the 70s because they were so comfortable to wear. They became so popular because they were so cheap and they lasted for such a long time. These were usually worn with socks, but they didn't have to be. With the upturned toe it made the walking lighter.

*Bell bottoms. In the 70s boot cut flare legs turned into bell bottoms. These pants have a flare at the bottom and were typically worn with platform shoes by women and clogs by men.

So as you can see there are some trends that were made in the 70s that are still fashionable today. If you look around you will still see many peace signs, girls in short shorts, neon clothing and halter tops. We have the 70s to thank for fashion becoming so important.
